Explanatory Notes
Click to add citation to My Citations. 1Clemens gave inscribed copies of Roughing It and Sketches, New and Old (see UCCL 09282), and possibly other books as well, to Lewis on the night of 24 August, in
recognition of his valor the previous day (see the letters of 25 and 27 Aug 1877 to
Brown and to the Howellses). When Lewis wrote to Clemens in 1880 to thank him
for the gift of a copy of A Tramp Abroad, he also mentioned “the past unmerited
presants you have kindly gave me” (11 Apr 1880, CU-MARK).
