This card was designed as a gift for Clemens by Truman W. (True) Williams (1839-97), a favorite illustrator for his books. Printed in red ink (faded to pink) with black background by the American Publishing Company, an unknown number were made available to Clemens on 30 December 1875 (L6, 5 Nov 1875 to Bliss, 585–86; 16 Dec 1875 to Conway, 601 n. 2).
