Elmira, Sept. 2./82.

D Mr. Perkins—

Dear Sir—

Please put in a tax-list for me. There is nothing to go into it, that I can call to mind, except the house, & your western mortgages, & 12 shares Hartford Fire Stock—(Hartford, ain’t it?—you own in the same Co; it is either Hartford onr Connecticut). I paid 142 for it.

They jumped my tax up in such a lively fashion last year, that I sold every taxable thing I had, & put the money into manufacturing-stocks & such-like. Next year I’ll put a mortgage on the house & not have a damned thing that’s taxable.

Please send Orion & my mother’s checks to Keokuk, Iowa, henceforth, & increase Orion’s to $100 a month.

All well here, & send love to you & your family.

Truly Yours

S L Clemens
