N. O. Thursday.
Well, Livy Darling, I lay abed till toward noon, yesterday, & made Osgood go out & meet the appointments. I got well rested up. I breakfasted, ◊ & then got up & went down; & by that [time] Osgood, who had been gone two hours & a half, was back again, & we projected a game of billiards——but right away came Horace Bixby, whose boat was just in, & a very enthusiastic meeting it was. I went down & dined with him & his family on the boat; & later I hunted up Tom Moore, who used to be mud clerk on the John J Roe when I was cub. He is short, & unwieldy with flesh, is a rich & respected burgher, & looks it. Good fellow is Tom; am going to his house to see his wife & six children, tomorrow.
I pretexted myself out of going down to the mouths of the river yesterday, & doubtless it was as wise a way as any. This morning we start on a cruise in a fast tug.
Goodby [Liv] Sweetheart, time is up—7.30! & we must rush to breakfast. Kiss ’em for me.
