dear charlie:

hamersley was here last night. i have met him half a dozen times within the last month, and we have never exchanged a word about that matter, but last night i asked him if the $25000.00. had been raised, and he said it had, and that the work of perfecting the machine was proceeding. nothing more was said. he was here as company, not on business. when you come, [prehaps] i can make an errand for you in washington, and then you can buy that stock. the matter with howard is simple. i bought that stock solely upon your recommendation. i would not buy any more of it without your recommendation. i could not buy it with the restriction which he wishes to place upon it any how. but this is not a matter of [discretion. discussion.] i do not need to see howard. it is just as i said in my telegram, i do not want any more of the stock now.

yours truly,

s. l. clemens.
