Branford, Conn., July 24.
Mr. Hickman:
Your letter arrived some little time ago, while we were in the confusion of getting located at the Sea Side, [&] it was mis-laid, lost in fact, for I have never been able to find it since. This will explain my not using your initials, they have escaped me.
It was a most pleasant compliment I assure you to be noticed by the young folks of my native place in such language as that, in which their resolution was framed, [&] I beg to transmit to them through you, my thanks [&] appreciation.
I have mailed an order to my publisher to send a copy of each of my books to the “Florida Literary Association,” [&] in this present letter I will enclose check for $25 for the association.
I refrain from apologizing for the meagerness of the amount, for the calls on me are so frequent that I am obliged to go warily, [&] impose upon myself an economy which goes a good deal against my grain.
I also beg to enclose a page of “Good [Literature,"] a weekly journal published in New York City at 50 cts. per year, devoted to advertising some astonishingly cheap books. I thought the association might think it worth while to know of such a concern. The books are worth much more than the price asked for them.
With many thanks to you [&] the Association,
I am truly yours,
S. L. Clemens.
