Selected images from the Mark Twain Papers
The first selection of photographic images from the Mark Twain Papers is now available. These photographs come from several of the collections in the Papers, including:
- SLC Image File (mixed provenance)
- Jean Clemens, Isabel V. Lyon and Dorothy Quick Photograph Albums
- James M. Tufts Collection
- Bound compilations of contemporary clippings and images collected by James M. Tufts and donated by Mr. and Mrs. Kurt E. Appert
The images, scanned at 150 dpi, derive from an early digitization project undertaken in 1999, which produced 1576 scans from the collection. The entire set of images (with enhanced metadata) will become available as information is checked and updated. The image database also contains more than 550 catalog records (without scans) for images held by other repositories, which will also be made available.
How to Search
Photographs from the Mark Twain Papers can be searched and browsed in two views, Sortable View (default) and Gallery View. To change views, select the desired one in the upper right-hand corner of the result page. You may use facets in the navigational panel to the left in both views for filtering and narrowing your search. Advanced search is also available.
Descriptive terms have been indexed encompassing what the depicted persons are holding (cigar, kitten) and wearing (dark lapel, checked tie); their position (standing, seated) and bearing (facing left, right); and physical details (muttonchops).
