Name |
Slote, Daniel (1828?–1882) |
Short Biography |
Dan Slote met SLC on the voyage of the Quaker City to Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. He features as Mark Twain’s fun-loving roommate in The Innocents Abroad, and is mentioned by name in “Cannibalism in the Cars” (1868). Slote was a Freemason (as was SLC at this time) and the co-owner of Slote and Woodman, a blank-book and stationery manufacturer in New York. The two remained friends, and SLC turned to Slote and Woodman to market his patented “self-pasting” scrapbook. In 1880–81, SLC invested in the Kaolatype business with Slote as partner and manager. SLC came to believe that Slote had cheated him in both ventures, and the friendship was ruptured. |
