Name

Slote, Daniel (1828?–1882)

Short Biography

Dan Slote met SLC on the voyage of the Quaker City to Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. He features as Mark Twain’s fun-loving roommate in The Innocents Abroad, and is mentioned by name in “Cannibalism in the Cars” (1868). Slote was a Freemason (as was SLC at this time) and the co-owner of Slote and Woodman, a blank-book and stationery manufacturer in New York. The two remained friends, and SLC turned to Slote and Woodman to market his patented “self-pasting” scrapbook. In 1880–81, SLC invested in the Kaolatype business with Slote as partner and manager. SLC came to believe that Slote had cheated him in both ventures, and the friendship was ruptured.
