East Oakland, Sept. 20. 1877.

Samuel L. Clemens, Esq,

Dear Sir:

I am engaged in arranging for publication the “log” or life written by my father, Capt. Wakeman. I have determined to appeal to the memories of some of his friends, in hopes to recover a few of the many “yarns” he used to tell, or to hear of any incidents in his life which would be of interest, and which he may not have recorded.

Remembering your kindness upon a former occasion, when you were at the pains to be incidental in releiving the family of a great embarrassment, I take the liberty to beg, if you hold in remembrance any of the matter which I am endeavoring to collect, that you will be so kind as to write me, and for which favor I shall be under great obligations to you.

Respectfully,

Mrs. M. L. (Wakeman-)Curtis.
