1 This letter is known to survive only insofar as Olivia reported its contents to her sister-in-law Mollie Clemens in a letter of 11 and 14 January 1874. Clemens originally planned to sail for New York on 17 January aboard the Abyssinia. By 30 December he had changed to the Parthia, which departed Liverpool on 13 January and arrived in Boston on 26 January (L5, 523, 541–42).
