In this copy of Tom Sawyer Twichell’s son Edward later noted the circumstances of Clemens’s gift: “Mark Twain presented this book to my father on Christmas Eve 1876 at a carolling party at our Hartford house. Mark often said that writing Tom Sawyer was fathers idea but that he was determined not to corrupt us by sharing the proceeds.”

paraph.
