1 The day before Clemens and his family left for Elmira to spend the spring and summer, he wrote this note “on the front page” of an unidentified book of Twichell’s, “beneath Twichell’s signature” (Cyril Clemens 1932, 35). Lilly Warner eventually returned the book to Twichell, whose family still owned it in 1932.
