Copy-text:Inscription in a copy of SLC 1875, listed in Goodspeed’s catalog, unknown date, no. 250, ix. Only a portion of
an earlier catalog entry is reproduced in the Goodspeed’s catalog, leaving out the title of the book, but
indicating that it was a “First Edition. | Presentation copy, with
inscription on fly-leaf: ‘To C. W. Stoddard, from S. L. Clemens, 1877.’” As presentation copies to Stoddard of first editions of Clemens’s
other books are accounted for, this one was almost certainly a copy of Sketches, New and Old
(SLC 1875).
