The allusion to Twichell (“Jo’s . . .
story”) suggests that this note—written on a 4.5
× 5 inch sheet of paper and clearly intended for an autograph
collection—may have been written to Joseph O’Hagan
(but see the previous letter, n. 6). Twichell’s story has not
been recovered.
Source text(s):
City Book Auction 1949, lot 12, which
describes the letter as written “all in
Clemen[s]’s hand on paper measuring
4½ by 5 inches.” The catalog text has no line breaks; the
present format has therefore been editorially supplied in accordance with
Clemens’s usual practice.
