Textual Commentary
Source text(s):
Paraphrase and transcript, Anderson Auction Company 1914, lot 101. The catalog describes the MS
as ‘CLEMENS (S. L.—“Mark Twain”). A.
L. S., 8vo, Hartford, Nov. 20, 1871, on a full letter-sheet with his
monogram.’ The quotation marks around Clemens’s pseudonym
reflect catalog style and do not indicate how he signed his letter. He and
Olivia were both using only her monogramed stationery at this time (see OLC to Howland, 20 Nov
71, and SLC
to OLC, 27 Nov 71).
