Charles Henry Webb, humorist and publisher of Clemens’s first book, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, And other Sketches ( SLC 1867), was born 24 January 1834. Clemens long harbored bad feelings toward Webb over his management of the
book (see L6, 443 n. 1).
