1 Sutro might have sent his New York address in the letter that reached Clemens on 19 August, or he may have wired him after his 22 August arrival at the Gilsey House, which had its own telegraph office.

2 Three subsidiaries of the American Publishing Company—Belknap and Bliss, Richard W. Bliss, and the Columbian Book Company—were housed at this address. Clemens was probably using an office at one of them to work on Roughing It (Geer 1871, 226; Hill, 16).
