1 Sutro telegraphed that he would be in New York until 30 August, when he was scheduled to depart for Liverpool on the Russia. Clemens almost certainly was at the St. Nicholas Hotel between 26 and 28 August—with Olivia, Ida Langdon, and one of the Langdon cousins—and probably met with Sutro then (“Passengers Sailed,” New York Times, 31 Aug 71, 8; “Morning Arrivals,” New York Evening Express, 26 Aug 71, 3; RI 1993, 867).
