Hartford, Oct. 27.

Dear Sir:

1. Began to write for a local public in the fall of 1862—& for the general American public in 1865 or ’66 (“Jumping Frog” &c).

2. Don’t remember “Science & the Mississippi,” by that title. Wrote a lot of Mississippi River articles for the Atlantic about four (or three) years ago.

3. I wrote the review of the poet Hammond’s works. An admirable singer.
