On the day he wrote this letter, Clemens wrote out a new contract with Bergen in his own hand and signed it; Bergen later added his own signature (CU-MARK):

Hartford, Sep. 21/77.

I hereby make over sell to H. W. Bergen my entire half interest in the play of The Gilded Age (Col. Sellers) from this time forth to the end of the present dramatic season, he to pay to me at the said end of the season such portion of the profits as shall have accrued as we shall agree to be just; Bergen to pay his own expenses & the expenses contemplated in my contract with Raymond, out of the receipts of the play (making to me a detailed report of these expenses at the end of the season.)

Sam. L. Clemens

I agree to furnish the detailed expense account referred to above, & to produce the profits, (if any,) at the end of the present dramatic season for sharing according to the terms that shall be then agreed upon between Clemens & me.

H. W. Bergen
