1 Clemens replied to Nast’s letter of 24 April (4 Apr 71 to Nast, n. 2). He probably mentioned that the proprietors of the Galaxy had no control over either of the two Galaxy sketches Nast had wanted for Th. Nast’s Illustrated Almanac for 1872. The almanac ultimately reprinted “The Late Benjamin Franklin” from the Galaxy and “Advice for Good Little Girls” from the Jumping Frog book, each accompanied by several drawings (Nast, 26–27, 47). Clemens’s response to Nast’s proposal of a separate pamphlet is not known, but no such pamphlet was published.
