1 The check and statement were for fifth quarter (1 Aug–31 Oct 70) sales of The Innocents Abroad, amounting to about 5,000 copies (Hirst 1975, 317). Since the corresponding royalty would have been about $1,000, Bliss may have made some deductions, including the cost of books Clemens had recently requested (21? Sept 70, 28 Oct 70, and 29 Oct 70, all to Bliss).
